Incidents to Which SARDA Has Responded







On this page we will give you some information on some of the incidents to which SARDA dog teams have responded. Due to the sensitive nature of some callouts, please understand that we are limited in what we can include.

Monday 16th August 2010 - Hungry Hill

1 searchdog team and a coastguard unit were called out to search for a father and son who got lost in fog and ended up stuck on a ledge on Hungry Hill on the Beara Peninsula. After two hours searching they were located by the coastguard unit. They were a bit damp and cold but otherwise ok and walked off with the rescue team.

Wednesday 14th July 2010 - Burren Co Clare

1 searchdog team was called to search for the owner of a car left at the base of Sliabh Cairn in the Burren. A local had seen the car parked in the area the previous evening and noticed it was still there the following morning and reported this to the Gardai.When the dog team arrived at the track to Sliabh Cairn they met the Gardai who had made contact with the owner of the car and she was just camping. The dog team and a second dog team that was on standby were stood down.

Monday 12th July 2010 - Connemara Co Galway

Two searchdog teams and Galway Mountain Rescue Team were calledout to search for a solo walker who failed to return home from a days walking in Connemara the previous day. The Gardai located the mans car at the foot of Corcog a popular area with walkers and climbers. Both dog teams and GMRT were tasked to search the mountain and after two hours searching a member of GMRT with binoculars spotted the man in a deep gully.( fatality) Both dog handlers assisted GMRT with the evacuation and a third searchdog team that was on standby was stood down. Sympathies to the relatives and friends of the man.

 Monday 28th June 2010 - Wicklow Mountains

Four girls from Northern Ireland participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme called for mountain rescue assistance in Co Wicklow. They were on a four day camping challange in the Wicklow Mountains, when on the third day they encountered heavy rain and poor visibilty which made their navigation challenging.

Both MR teams in Wicklow responded and SARDA received a call for search dog teams around 4pm from the Glen of Imaal MRT. Two dog teams responded and they were asked to meet a Air Corps helicopter in the Curragh with the intention of dropping them on to the mountains. The heli took the first dog team that arrived at the RV but was unable to put them on Lugnaquilla due to low cloud so dropped them near rescue base and returned to the Curragh for the second dog team. The girls were found by a Mountain Rescue Search Party around 8.30pm just before the first dog team was deployed and the second was enroute to rescue base in the helicopter.

Rescue Base had  occasional text comms. with the girls and as they had camping gear advised them to erect their tent and wait until found.They were all ok and walked out to waiting team 4x4s

Monday 7th June 2010 - Ballinrobe Co Mayo

One searchdog team responded to a call to assist with a search for a missing person in Ballinrobe Co Mayo. Following a briefing in the local garda station and deployment to the search area news was received that the missing person was found safe and well. Searchdog team was stood down.

Wednesday 19th May 2010 - Burren Co Clare

One searchdog team and a coastguard unit responded to a call from a man who was lost in fog on the Burren Co Clare. From talking to him on the phone a general location was established.Through phone contact and search teams calling out his name he was found a short time later The dog team was not deployed.

Thursday 25th March 2010 - Galtee Mountains

One dog team responded with a mountain rescue team to a call from two female walkers who reported themselves lost in the Black Road area of the Galtee Mountains. They were located by a mountain rescue search party and walked off. The dog team was stoodown enroute.

Friday 18th September 2009 - Glencolmcill, Co. Donegal

Dave and Sheba responded to a call from the Donegal Errigal MR team to assist in the search for a missing man.  After leaving home at 4.00 am to travel to the search location, they searched for 7 hours along the coastline with some areas of steep ground.  The weather conditions were good and the search included the MR team, Gardai, coast guard helicopter, SARDA Northern Ireland and local farmers.  Sadly the man remains missing at this time

Sunday 2nd August - Monday 3rd August 2009.  Search with Galway Mountain Rescue

Caitriona and Zac assisted Galway Mountain Rescue in the search for an elderly man missing from his home.  They searched for 6.5 hours in very wet boggy land with some hilly ground.  The man was found alive the next morning by the Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter  about 600 metres from his own house.  The elderly man had been moving during the night.

Sunday 12th July - Monday 13th July - Inis Oirr, Aran Islands

Caitriona and Zac, with Doolin Coast Guard, were tasked to go to Inis Oirr to search for a man missing on the Island.  Zac and Caitriona along with the Coast Guard crew went across on the Doolin Coast Guard Delta Rib boat.  They searched inland in fields and rough ground as well as craggy areas for 3 hours and returned to the mainland on the Delta.

They went across on the passenger ferry the following day and, along with Doolin Coast Guard members, searched the 10.2 km of shores and coastline all around the Island for 5 hours.  The search involved Doolin Coast Guard, the RNLI Aran Lifeboat, Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter, Island Garda and local Islanders, Galway Sub Aqua Club, and a boat from Carna.  It is sad to report that the man's body was found some days later and SARDA extends every sympathy to his family.

Friday 3rd July - Sunday 5th July - Bantry, Co. Cork

SARDA's dog teams were asked by Garda Siochana to assist in the search for a missing man.

Friday:  Catherine and Lily searched mountain terrain for 5 hours. 

Saturday:  Mick and Bono searched areas of rough ground for 9 hours in areas that were done earlier by local search groups. These were areas of overgrown bogland and scrub, pasture, area of drainage dykes, small landfill, and felled forestry.

Sunday:  Caitriona and Zac, and Mick and Bono searched together for a total of 15 hours in wet conditions, with rain for most of day and some very heavy showers although there was  a good breeze most of time  The search was in two parts:  4.5 hours  in mixed areas of woodland, felled woodland, forest tracks and farmland.  After returning to the Incident Room in Bantry and resting their dogs, they resumed searching for a further 3 hours in areas of farmland and forest tracks and the grounds of a Day Hospital and a Residential Care Home.

The man remains missing at this time.

Wednesday 1st July - Mulwrae, Co. Mayo

Dave and Sheba were asked by Galway MRT to assist Mayo MRT in the search for a woman who had tragically fallen whilst walking with her husband.  Caitriona and Zac were en-route to help but were stood down when the woman's body was found.  Dave and Sheba searched in mountain terrain for 2.5 hours and Dave then assisted the MR team in evacuating the woman

Friday 12th June - Saturday 13th June -  Midleton, Co Cork

Catherine with Lily were asked by the Ballycotton Coastguard Unit to assist in the search for a man missing from a boat in Ballinacurra area.  On the Friday evening they searched the estuary shoreline at high tide for 4 hours and on the Saturday afternoon they searched the estuary at low tide for 3 1/2 hours.  The search was concluded when the man's body was found by the coastguard. Other teams involved in the search were Guileen Coastguard, Crosshaven Coastguard, Coastguard helicopter, Naval divers from Haulbowline and Gardai.  Our sympathies are with his family

Sunday 26th April 2009 - Galtee Mountains, Co. Tipperary

Bono and Mick assisted Semra in walking off two females who were suffering from hypothermia from the col between Galtymore and Galtybeg. They were working for 3.5 hours

Monday 13th April 2009 - Doolin, Co. Clare

Doolin Coast Guard Unit requested a SARDA dog team to assist in the search for a male teenager, reported missing in the Doolin area. Searches commenced at 05.30 a.m. covering the Doolin area and further.

The Coast Guard and SARDA dog team, Caitriona and Zac,  searched from last known position, fields, sheds and around buildings behind village. About an hour later search dog Zac located the boy and the Coast Guard/SARDA team found the boy safe and well and he was reunited with his group.

Friday 13th March 2009 - Wicklow

Two dog teams responded to Glen of Imaal's request  to assist in the search for a missing man. In conjunction with the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue team, Mick and Bono commenced at 9.30 p.m. and Caitriona and Zac commenced at 11.00 p.m.    Starting for the last known position Caitriona and Zac searched dense forest and more open rough forest for 4.5 hours; Mick and Bono searched a forest area for about 3.5 hours.  Mick and Bono continued to search forest on Saturday morning for 2.5 hours.  The man was found by members of the mountain rescue teams on Saturday morning

Tuesday 10th February 2009 - Wicklow

Bono and Mick responded with SEMRA to a call from the Glen of Immal Team in Wicklow at 1am for a search for two walkers. The dog team and Semra searched an area south of Lugnacoille. Due to heavy snow, moving around the area was slow and there was low cloud.  They spent 9 hours on the hill. The two men were found on the south prision to the north of the dog team and stretchered to an area the helicopter could get to. They are both reported to be recovering well.  Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team has expressed their thanks to SARDA for their assistance.

Sunday 7th February - Doolin, Co. Clare

Zac and Caitriona assisted Doolin Coast Guard Unit in a search for a missing woman at the Cliffs of Moher. They searched farm land and fields for 3.5 hours at the last known position in all directions up to the cliffs. Sadly, the woman's body was found a few days later some 10 miles away.

Saturday 31st January - Sunday 1st February - Kilbrittan Co. Cork

 

Mick and Bono were called by the Gardai to assist in the search for a woman missing in the area for the past 7 days along with the Garda, Civil Defence and about 200  local people.  They searched farmland and the sides of local roads for five hours on the Saturday and on the Sunday searched alongside a busy road, which necessitated the dog being on the lead at times, as well as an area of sand dunes and farmland for 5.5 hours. The conditions were cold with some heavy rain and sleet and strong winds mixed in with drier conditions. The woman's body was found some days later in a different location.

Friday 2nd -  Sunday 4th January 2009 -  Curracloe, Co. Wexford

Bono and Mick responded to a call from the Gardai to search for a missing youth.  This large scale search involved SEMRA, Dublin/Wicklow MRT, Glen of Imaal MRT, Civil Defence, Coast Guard and  450-1000 members of the public

Friday 2nd
The dog team was tasked by Gardai to search woods by the beach. These woods had very heavy brambles and the dog team searched these in a period of 3.5 hours.

Saturday 3rd
.
The same dog team searched a large area of sand dunes for 3 hours and had to move fast to keep ahead of Civil Defence and Coast Guard who were also searching the same area. In the afternoon the woodland by the beach was searched in another section for 1.5 hours.
 
Sunday 4th

The dog team searched the northern edge of marshland running between the village and the sea and the southern edge of the woodland by the sea for a total of 6 hours.

Sadly, the youth's body was found on the shore near Wexford town some days later.

Thursday 1st January 2009 - Slievenamon and Galty Mountains

Two callouts were received on new years day via SEMRA. 

Bono and Mick were on standby with SEMRA for a call from a family group lost in mist on Slievenamon. Stood down after SEMRA callout officer talked them down by phone.
Bono and Mick attended a callout with SEMRA to the Galty Mountains. A pair of walkers had become lost in mist while descending from Galtymore. The pair were found by a SEMRA search party just as the dog team were being deployed.

Thursday 4th December to Saturday 6th December

Call out to Co. Waterford/Tipperary

Thursday 4th

Bono and Mick were paged by the Tramore Gardai to search for a man reported to be in woodland near Mahon Falls with Semra. The man had been talking to his family by phone a short time earlier and the family had given the location. Dog and MR teams stood down after 3 hours after Gardai traced the man's phone in the south Kilkenny area.

Friday 5th

Bono and Mick were paged by the Tramore Gardai and asked to search two woods in south Kilkenny.  Because it was late in the afternoon it was decided to leave one woodland area until Saturday.  Dog team and Liam McCabe of Semra searched a wood near Mullinavat for 2 hours but found nothing.

Saturday 6th

Two dog teams, Zac and Caitriona and Bono and Mick along with Gerry Tobin and Terry Brophy of Semra went to search a wood near Templeorum. After an hour searching they were stood down since the man had been located the man in Carrick-on-Suir by the Gardai.

Tuesday 18th November 2008 - Call out to Shrule, Co Mayo

Caitriona and Zac assisted the Gardai in the search for a missing woman along with Corrib Mask Rescue (a unit of The Irish Red Cross) and local residents.  Zac searched through farm land near the woman’s home and along river banks for about two hours.  In addition Corrib Mask Rescue was searching the river using their boat and Gardai divers were deployed.

The body of the lady was found on Friday 21st November by the Gardai divers, may she rest in peace.

Thursday 30th October 2008 and Saturday 1st November 2008 -  Call Out to Cahir, Co. Tipperary

Caitriona and Zac and Mick and Bono were called out to Cahir on 30th October  to assist in the search for a missing man. Along with Gardai and Civil Defence, and Cahir River Rescue they met at 9.30 in morning.  The dog teams searched along river banks and wooded land for about 2 and a half hours. Later Caitriona and Zac searched down river along the bank in very swampy wooded land for another 2 hours.  Along with the two dog teams there were the two teams searching the river from boats.

Mick and Bono subsequently received another call on Saturday 1st November from South Tipperary Civil Defence for assistance in the search in Cahir.  Together they searched a farm area and then more woodland for approx 4.5 Hours.

 On Thursday 6th November a man’s body was found by Civil Defence in a different area of woodland.

Sunday 3rd August 2008 - Call out to Dingle


An 80 year old man went missing in Dingle and initial information stated that the man had been last seen at An Dun Rua Pier, heading towards the Dingle Way. It later emerged on Monday evening that he had been seen going towards Ballinknockane village. A large number of people were involved in the search with SAR teams from Dingle Coast Guard, Kerry MR and the Civil Defence along with family members and many volunteers from the public. The Dingle coastguard contacted SARDA for assistance and both Mick and Bono and Caitriona and Zac responded to the call. Both dog teams searched in different areas of mixed cliff edge, fields, young forest, bogland and dense high ferns. Between them they searched for about 18 hours

On Tuesday the human search teams began a search again with many volunteers and spread the areas out. A team found a jumper and later a Belfast telegraph newspaper and all searchers came and concentrated on that area where at 14.00 on the Tuesday they found the missing man but sadly he was dead. He had walked up hill, over difficult ground, about 2 Km from the last known position.

Sunday 13th July 2008 SARDA Callout

Mick and Bono responded to a callout received by SEMRA from the Gardai along with two other members of SEMRA. An adult and four teenagers had descended down the northside of the Galtees instead of the southside and were reported missing. Mick came upon them safe and well while driving around forest tracks near Rossadrihid

Friday 21st March 2008 SARDA Callout

A hiker reported missing in the Wicklow mountains sparked off a large scale search eventually involving most of the MRT teams in the country. Mick and Bono began searching on Friday. On Saturday the search area was widened. Trevor and Holly joined the search along with several other MRT Teams. Sadly a body was found in the afternoon by members of the Sligo/Leitrim MRT.

17th March 2008 SARDA Callout

A 63yr old man went missing from a west Cork pier on 5th Jan. On the night of 16th March a woman out walking her dog on a near by beach thought she saw something by the waters edge. She went over to have a look and when she did her dog started digging furiously around the spot. She rang the local coast guards who went out, witnessed the dog digging so they got shovels and started digging themselves but to no avail. At this point the coast guard contacted SARDA requesting a search dog to give the area a sweep just to make sure. Trevor and Holly went and gave the area a sweep with the local superintendant, the Coastguard area officer, and 2 of his officers, but with no luck. Total time 3hrs.

Rescue In Comeragh Mountains. 27 January 2008

Gardai in Waterford alerted the South East Mountain Rescue team to an incident in the Comeragh Mountains. A 56 year old man had fallen while climbing in a gully in the area around Lough Coumshingaun. The mans wife was with him and she had contacted the Gardai. The team issued a full team callout to all its members. Mick being a member of the team responded bringing Bono with him. With the Coast Guard helicopter on the way it looked like a routine call out but the weather played a hand and this was unsuccessful. Mick and Bono were able to establish the precise location of the casualty and help with First Aid. The man having sustained a head and hip injury was brought down the mountain from a difficult location with the assistance of The Tramore Cliff Rescue Team who had also responded.

Sunday 6th January 2008 - SARDA Callout

Trevor with Holly and Mick with Bono were called out by the Red Cross and Gardai to assist in the search in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo for a woman missing since 27th December 2007. Trevor reports that the dogs searched for 6.5hrs. The dog team was assigned to search river banks, fields and wooded areas. Sadly the lady's body was recovered by the Corrib Mask rescue team the following week.

Saturday 15th December 07 - SARDA Callout

Trevor with Holly and Mick with Bono were called out to assist in the search in Co. Clare for a missing man. Trevor and Holly commenced at 10am and continued until 1500 Saturday and Mick and Bono commenced at 10am until 1500 Sunday a total of 10hrs actual searching in conjunction with the coast guard and some volunteers from the public with approx 100 people in all involved. The dog team was assigned to search waterways, marinas, fields, woods and even derelict buildings. Sadly the man was not located by any of the teams and remains missing at the present time.

Saturday 25th August 07 - SARDA Call Out

Trevor with Holly and Mick with Bono were called out to assist in the search in the Glen of Aherlow, Co. Tipperary for a woman missing from her home. Concerns had been expressed for her safety by her family at 4.00 p.m. and the dogs search commenced at 10.00 p.m and continued until 3a.m. in conjunction with SEMRA with approx 30 people in all involved. The dog teams were assigned to search woodland and scrub for up to 2km approx. The search resumed in the morning at 7.00 a.m. and the woman was found by her nephew about 300 yards from her car. She was taken to hospital suffering with the effects of hypothermia after being out all night.

Sunday 12th August 2007 - SARDA Call Out

Mick with Bono and Trevor with Holly were called out to assist in the search for a woman missing in Co. Wicklow near Powerscourt waterfall. The search teams met at Crones Wood in the early hours of Sunday morning with the search commencing at 7.00 a.m. Brian Haskins acted as coordinator and they joined in the search along with Glen of Imaal MRT, Dublin/Wicklow MRT, Civil Defence, Gardai and an air force helicopter (with an ESTIMATED 30-40 people involved between all the teams).The dog teams were assigned to search fields, river areas and hills up to about 5km away. The woman's location was eventually pinpointed to a woodland area and a group made up from 2 or 3 members from each team including both dogs, spent an hour searching for her through the woods before she was finally found. The search was completed at 14.30 with the woman being rescued safe and well but very disoriented.

Wednesday 11th July 2007 - SARDA Call Out

Trevor with Holly and Mick with Bono were called out to assist in the search for a patient who had gone missing from a nursing home in Co. Kilkenny. Helen Macnamara acted as coordinator and they joined in the search along with Gardai and Civil Defence (about 30 people in all) and the dog teams were assigned to search fields, bog and some woodland up to about 3km away. Mick and Bono searched for 5hrs and Trevor and Holly searched for 4hrs. The patient was found safe and well in the early hours of the morning behind the nursing home by the human search team.

Febuary 20 2006

Tim and Broc were called by the Coast Guard to help in a search on Achill Island Co. Mayo. Coast Guard, Gardai Dog Unit and many volunteers were involved. A body was recovered from a lake on the island.

12th Jan 2006 Mountain Rescue Callout

Martin and Carn were called by Garda after a passerby noticed car left at Car park late at night at Muckish Mountain Co.Donegal and called Garda ,When they arrived 3 Garda had gone up mountain and as they were being tasked the Garda located the man who was camping over night and had told no one ,Team stood down

January 2006

Tim and Broc were asked by Gardai to help with search round Headford Co. Galway for a missing person, It extended over several days. A body was recovered from the Clare river.

28th Oct Mountain Rescue Callout

Martin and Carn were called out with Donegal MRT after a passing Driver noticed what he thought were flashing distress lights in Derryveagh Mountains Co.Donegal, Followed lights to party who were doing night nav ,Team stood down

Tim and Broc were stood down on the way to Kilkelly Co. Mayo and to Clonmel having reached Roscrea.

15th Aug 2005 Mountain Rescue Callout 

Martin and Carn were called out with Donegal MRT to look for an elderly Man overdue from days walking in Derryveagh Mountain ,Conditions very dense fog ,Searched for 4 hours at night ,Man located by Team Members and assisted off mountain safely

August 2005

Tim and Broc responded as members of the Galway MRT to look for four missing teenagers behind Kylemore Co. Galway. They were found 3.30 am. They were French with little English and relieved to find the barking dog was part of the rescue team. One girl was cold and weak.. After a hot drink and some food supplied by the Galway team they were assisted down the mountain.

30th July 2005 CoastGuard Callout

Martin and Carn were called out after an elderly mans boat washed ashore at Kincasslagh Co.Donegal ,Searched coast line for 3 hours at night ,No find –Body picked up in water by lifeboat as they were finishing the area

20th July 2005 Coast Guard callout

Martin and Carn were called out to look for a child missing from home near Rosbeg Co.Donegal Child turned up safe and well en route

Tim and Broc searched the area round Clonmel Hospital with Helen McNamara as organizer. A body was later recovered some distance away.

June 2005

Tim and Broc assisted the Gardai with a night search of the grounds of Castlebar Hospital for a missing person. 2 days later the search moved to Croagh Patrick were the Mayo MRT provided a navigator. A body was recovered from the sea at the base of the mountain

December 31st 2004- January 3rd 05

A large scale search over a 150sq mile area for a missing Sweedish man was conducted over the new year period in the Kerry mountains. The search covered such a vast area that Sarda Ireland requested the assistance of her sister associations in Wales and Northern Ireland. With the assistance of the RAF and the Irish Aer Corps the extra dog teams seven in all arrived rapidly and assisted in the overall search operation. The search was coordinated by the Kerry mountain rescue team, many other mountain rescue teams also assisted in one of the biggest search operations ever in the Kerry hills. Despite the massive search and effort by all the parties nothing was found and the man is still missing.

December 16 2004

Sarda members attended a search co-ordinated by the SEMRA team for a missing woman in the Galtee mountains. The woman had become separated from her walking companion and was benighted on the mountain she was located by a local the following morning safe and well but cold.

October 2004

Sarda member assisted a injured motorcyclist in the Mahon Falls area of the Commeraghs mountains. Trevor, Peter and Denis were on a training exercise when they were informed of the accident. They administered First aid and when the ambulance arrived they assisted the crew to evacuate the casualty

September 2004

A Sarda dog team was tasked by the Gardai to assist in the search for a man in co Cavan ,however the man was located while the dog team were in route.

September 2004

Henry and Morse were tasked to search an area around a sunken boat for a missing fisherman in the Galway area by the coast guard, The coast guard helicopter transported the dog team into the area and winched them onto an Island. The search took around two hours and the dog indicated significantly in one particular area. A few days later the missing mans body was recovered.

Summer 2004

Henry and Morse were tasked by the Gardai to search for a missing teenager in co Cork, however the missing person turned up before they were deployed.

Spring 2004

Henry and Morse attended a search for a 47 yr old man in the Blessington area of Wicklow , The search involved other agencies including the Dublin Wicklow mountain rescue team. The Sarda team searched for a period of around eight hours, As of yet the missing man has not been located.

August 15th 2003, Near Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick, Search.

Henry, Fergus & Sinead attended a large search operation for missing 81 year old woman in Co. Limerick. 2 dog teams worked for 3 days. The woman turned up safe and well in nearby village on the 4th day.

June 21st, 2003, Clonmel, Co.Tipperary, Search.

Fergus and Bess attended a search for a missing elderly man in the Clonmel area. The man was found alive and well in a nearby field after several days.

27th March 2003. Glencullen, Co. Wicklow. Search.

The Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue team responded to a call from the Gardaí to search for a suspected missing elderly lady. The Irish Coastguard Helicopter and SARDA - Search & Rescue Dogs Association where also involved in the search. At approximately 12 midnight, Gardaí stood Mountain Rescue down - Note: This woman had not been reported missing by anyone at any stage of the incident - as no sign of the woman could be found after tracks, roads and the surrounding hillside had been searched.

SARDA assisted Glen of Imaal MRT

17th November 2002. Aughavannagh, Co. Wicklow. Fatality.

The Dublin/Wicklow & Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue teams were contacted by Gardaí to assist in the search for a 74 year old Hill-Walker had not yet returned from his day in the hills. The Mountain Rescue teams were joined by the Irish Coastguard Helicopter at daylight and as fresh Mountain Rescue personnel were dispatched onto the hills, Search and Rescue Dogs (SARDA) joined in the search. As the search continued, neighboring Mountain Rescue Team, SEMRA, The Civil Defense and The Army were called in to aid in the search for the missing man. Many Hill-Walkers and members of the man's family also offered their support in the Search Effort by Mountain Rescue. The man's body was found in the early afternoon by rescue personnel on one of the many forest track's in the area. The teams involved in the search wish to offer their condolences to the family of the gentleman and also to extend their thanks to all involved.

30th April 2000. Alohart, Co Kerry. Search.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was mobilised following reports that two people, who had been walking in the Alohart area, had heard calls for help. An extensive search was then commenced which continued until nightfall before being suspended. A scaled down search involving two SARDA dog teams was carried out on the following day. Nothing was found.

13th April 1996. Conor Pass, Co. Kerry. Fatality.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was called when a ten year old boy failed to return from a climb at Pedlar's Lake. The ICG (then IMES) helicopter and the Dingle CCRS were also called but neither could be of assistance due to adverse weather. The team proceeded to search the spur where the boy had last been seen, but found nothing. Some time later, a search dog team searching the area at the back of the lake reported finding the boy's body. He was stretchered from the mountain and handed over to an undertaker. The teams involved in the search wish to offer their condolences to the family of the gentleman and also to extend their thanks to all involved.

10th June 1995. Mangerton, Co.Kerry. Search.

Following the discovery of an abandoned tent, a general search of the Horses Glen/Devil's Punch Bowl area was made by the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team in conjunction with SARDA, followed by a detailed line search covering several square kilometers around the tent. Neither search revealed anything and the owner of the tent identified himself to Gardaí in Limerick several days later.

22nd October 1995. Lauragh, Co. Kerry. Search.

A local farmer and his brother had got separated on the mountain and one man failed to return. An advance Kerry Mountain Rescue Team party and SARDA search dog team carried out a preliminary search in the dark, but found nothing, and a full scale search was launched at first light. At 14.30 the missing man was located very cold and wet, but otherwise uninjured, and was transferred to hospital for medical assessment.

6th June 1990. Brandon, Co. Kerry. Alert.

A 23 year old professional photographer from Germany became separated from his friend on the Eastern pilgrim route. After initial groundwork by the Kerry Mountain Rescue team and the Gardaí, the callout was put on standby as the helicopter was en route to Cork to pick up SARDA dogs. The team were about to resume the search when the man descended unaided.

23rd June 1990. Mount Eagle, Co. Kerry. Fatality.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was requested to co-ordinate a large-scale search of the Mount Eagle area for a missing farmer. SARDA dog teams from Wales and Northern Ireland were also used, after being transported here by the RAF. The man's body was located, having suffered a heart attack. The teams involved in the search wish to offer their condolences to the family of the gentleman and also to extend their thanks to all involved.

23rd September 1989. Carrauntoohil, Co. Kerry. Fatality.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue team were alerted after an English walker failed to return to his car at Mealis. After an initial search of the most likely areas proved fruitless, the search was extended to involve the Civil Defense, Gardaí, SARDA dog teams from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Air Corps and other local groups. The extended search covered an area from Lough Acoose to the Gap of Dunloe and continued for 10 days, after which time it was officially called off, although many team members continued searching at weekends. The body was finally located by the team during a search dog training session in April 1990 and the remains were immediately evacuated to awaiting Gardaí. The teams involved in the search wish to offer their condolences to the family of the gentleman and also to extend their thanks to all involved.
